Summertime. Anytime. Nothing better than being beach-bound with nothing on your mind but fun and relaxation.  Then the unexpected shows up. You never know what might happen – a blackout, an earthquake, a flood!  Where ever you are in the world, things happen. It’s ok! You’re covered because you planned for this. Whenever one of these unforeseen events occurs, we always think about being prepared.

Stay Informed

Make sure you know where to go for information. Take a little time to do a few Google searches on your local emergency websites and phone numbers. Knowing where to go will save you a lot of time if you find yourself in an emergency. If you’re a New York City resident, the official source for information about emergency alerts and important city services can be found, here.

Have a Paper Copy of Phone Numbers and Contact Information

We all rely on our cell phones.  In times of times of emergency, electricity and cell phone service may be unavailable.  Create a paper copy of the contact information for your family and other important people/offices, such as medical facilities, doctors, schools, or service providers.

Make A Plan

Make a plan today. Your family may not be together if a disaster strikes, so it is important to know which types of disasters could affect your area.  Know how you’ll contact one another and reconnect if separated. Establish a family meeting place that’s familiar and easy to find.

Build a Kit

Make sure your emergency kit is stocked and ready to go. Most of the items are inexpensive and easy to find, and any one of them could save your life. Here’s a few items that ready.gov recommends for your kit:

  • Water
  • Food – at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert
  • Flashlight
  • First aid kit
  • Extra batteries
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Manual can opener for food
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery

Check-in on your neighbors

In any time of uncertainty, it is always great to check in with those living around you.
